A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ASPLEY ORCHID SOCIETY INCORPORATED
After the Aspley Opportunity School was opened in November 1973 the Groundsman/Janitor, Charlie Morgan and friend Leney Smith helped with the school fetes by setting up orchid displays. As a great deal of interest was shown in these displays the two men thought about the possibility of starting an orchid society to aid the school.
In November 1975 a number of keen orchid growers met at the Aspley Opportunity School to investigate the possibility of extending orchidology into this fast growing area of our city. Those who attended were – C. Morgan, L. & J. Smith, E. & E. Clarke, K.& V. Hatcher, P. Townsley, M. Struthers, M. & G. Clarke, D. Broughton, A. Lovett, A. Loder, J. Bennett, L. Campbell, L. Goodwin and B. Short.
From their efforts The Aspley Orchid Society was born and the inaugural meeting was held on Friday 6th February 1976. The emphasis of this new society was to encourage new growers in their hobby and to assist the Aspley Opportunity School as much as possible. Details of this first meeting are -
